The DfE previously said that given the interest in this year’s reading test, Mr Gibb asked the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) for their assessment of the relative difficulty of this year’s test and the agency had confirmed that the content was “at the appropriate level of difficulty”. “It validates what school leaders were saying and it is a real shame that the department was not willing to acknowledge this earlier.” Reading paper not more difficult, Gibb toldĬommenting on the fall in KS2 reading pass marks this year, Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the NAHT school leaders’ union, said that the move was a “significant and clear recognition that this was a more challenging test for children”.Cutting lost papers ‘key priority’ this year, says STA.Why this year’s Sats reading paper was so difficult. The threshold for the GPS test was raised from 35 out of 70 to 36. In maths, the 2022 threshold of 58 out of 110 has this year been dropped to 56. Tes revealed last month that schools minister Nick Gibb had been told that the reading paper was not more difficult than previous years’ assessments. The fall comes after months of concern voiced by leaders who warned that the paper left even the most able pupils “broken” and in tears. In the reading test, the threshold has fallen from 29 out of 50 in 2022 to 24 this year. The Department for Education also published the thresholds for reaching the expected standard for KS2 reading, maths and grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS) tests this morning.

There may be up to six instances of War Thunder players leaking classified information on the game's forums. Rumors say the "leaker" had actually worked on the helicopter in question and thus was able to provide Gaijin Entertainment with non-public information on its specs (it is still unverified if said incident took place). Though this is considered the first major leak in the War Thunder forums by many publications, after similar instances occurred, users in various forums have cited an incident where classified data on the Eurocopter Tiger had leaked, and that incident was the first War Thunder forums leak. The user was warned and moderators and developers reiterated their stance that Gaijin Entertainment only creates vehicles based on publicly available information. Ministry of Defence that the document posted by Fear_Naught remained classified, and that posting the image was an illegal offense that could carry a 14-year prison sentence. The user, believed to be a member of the Royal Tank Regiment of the United Kingdom, then uploaded altered images they claimed were from the Army Equipment Support Publication, or AESP, of the tank.Ī moderator of the forums responded to the post saying that the team behind Gaijin had received written confirmation from the U.K. On July 14th, 2021, War Thunder forum user Fear_Naught took issue with the game's representation of Britain's Challenger 2 tank. Developer Gaijin Entertainment has publically stated its policy is to use publically available information when modeling combat vehicles, which inevitably leads to some inaccuracy in crafting a so-called "perfect" recreation of said vehicles. In the video game War Thunder, players can operate realistic combat vehicles modeled on actual military equipment. But yeah, I still think based on the damage, it was a solid EF-5 and the NWS won’t change the rating. So are the engineers claiming that the winds aloft in the tornado might have been EF-5 but the surface winds were only EF-4? I don’t get it. Watch the video taken by chaser Jeff Pitrowski & it’s clear this tornado was extremely violent. I still think the Joplin tornado’s core winds were solidly EF-5, well over 200mph, probably 220-250 max. It went to EF-4/EF-5 status in literally minutes. This tornado had an intense mesocyclone, probably one of the most intense ever in recent history, and amazingly rapid strengthening. I seriously doubt Joplin was lower than EF-5. I haven’t ever been to Joplin but based on the horrific pictures taken after the tornado, the entire town look flattened as if by a nuclear bomb, with only the hospital still standing. I feel better about meteorologists doing the assessing of tornadoes and their damage. They claim that the weak nature of the structures in Joplin led them to conclude this. Regarding the the American Society of Civil Engineers claim that the tornado’s winds might have reached EF-5 strength but that the worst damage done was EF-4, I think this is iffy at best. Engineers found evidence of winds of at least 205mph only inches above the surface, a remarkable figure considering the density of structures and the dramatic slowing effect of ground friction. It is likely that most of the extreme damage occurred in only a few seconds as a result of brief wind features with instantaneous gusts over 250mph. Video evidence, which is discussed more in depth here, indicates that the massive tornado had exceptionally powerful multiple vortices. Even so, the Joplin storm was one of the most powerful tornadoes ever surveyed, and likely caused the most intense tornado damage ever photographed in an urban area. Additionally, it had a fairly short path length – less than 25 miles. Unlike some infamous EF5’s, the Joplin tornado was rain-wrapped and not clearly documented on film. The Joplin tornado was an incredible meteorological phenomena. At far right, the tornado left a trail of scoured vegetation and pronounced wind rowing. Just east of Rangeline Road, warehouses were left as bare slabs, and large industrial vehicles were hurled more than 400 yards. Geodetic survey images that were taken immediately after the tornado have been included to verify that the homes were swept away by the tornado, and not bulldozers. Note: Most of the close aerial shots were taken more than a week after the tornado, so some damage clean-up had already taken place. Considering the incredible density of the buildings in Joplin, however, the volume of clean foundations was rather impressive. The Enhanced Fujita Scale puts great emphasis on homes of superior construction, so a concrete slab is not an obvious indication of EF5 winds. The Joplin tornado left more empty slabs than perhaps any tornado in history. A partially leveled home looks more insidious to the average person than a clean foundation. Damage in the EF3 range tends to be the media standard. Firstly, newspapers and news websites have a history of ignoring photographs of EF5 damage in favor of weaker, yet more commonly recognizable damage. Many online weather enthusiasts have pondered over the veracity of the EF5 rating, and some researchers have stated that there appeared to be few instances of EF5 damage in the tornado’s aftermath. A google search of “Joplin tornado damage” reveals pages of media imagery showing building damage consistent with a tornado of EF3 or low-end EF4 intensity. □ Despite being the deadliest and most destructive tornado in recent history, the Joplin tornado’s awesome strength is sometimes overlooked. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was considered as the main cog in the US Navy war effort all through the Pacific during WW2. The same year, it got Reserve Grand Champion at Oshkosh and earned the “Golden Wrench” medal for its perfect restoration. It was recovered in nearly original condition and had been on display at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum with the very same paint since 1944. The aircraft lay on the floor of Lake Michigan for over five decades. On January 19, 1944, while attempting to land on the USS Wolverine, Ensign Ronald Kelly experienced a loss of power on approach and soft landed in the water prior to reaching the carrier. Though slower than other attack aircraft used later in the war, crews popularized the name “Slow But Deadly” as an alternate meaning of the SBD acronym. The SBD was eventually replaced by newer aircraft in the post-war era, but it remains an important part of aviation history. It was used by the United States Navy, the United States Marine Corps, and the British Royal Navy, among others. The SBD saw action in many different theaters of the war, including the Pacific, Europe, and North Africa. The SBD was also armed with a variety of weapons, including machine guns and bombs, which made it a formidable opponent in air-to-air and air-to-ground combat. It was equipped with a powerful engine and had a range of over 1,000 miles. The SBD was designed to be a versatile aircraft that could operate from both aircraft carriers and land bases. The SBD was a sturdy and reliable aircraft, and it played a key role in several major naval battles of the war, including the Battle of Midway. It was developed by the Douglas Aircraft Company and entered service with the United States Navy in 1940. The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a World War II-era American naval dive bomber. However, I felt that the film was also subject to common horror tropes such as overusing dramatic irony. Using this as the main driver of its horror is done well as it shows how utterly useless normal people would be to a superpowered villain. In “Brightburn” I felt that putting audiences in the shoes of normal people works well to isolate the viewer. The most important element to a good horror film is how scary it is. Similarly, I feel that the horror elements of the film fail to innovate and only imitates what has come before it. Due to this, many characters have no real change or larger role in the film as we mainly follow Brandon’s sadistic spiral downwards. Because this is a horror film, I feel that this movie would have benefited by being longer and having more buildup and overall substance to the plot. The film chooses to only focus on a close-knit cast and never branches out. With Brandon acting as the exclusionary force, it gives us a twisted look into the mind of a warped, superpowered child. The plot is simple with other one note characters used to push the film along to its final climactic act. The movie follows their lives after Brandon finds his powers and starts to act more malicious and evil. Tori Breyer (Elizabeth Banks) is nurturing and motherly to Brandon as he changes further to his sinister side and Kyle Breyer (David Denman) is the caring father figure that tries to set Brandon on the right path. Both parents stay skeptical to their adopted sons new personality and erratic behaviour. Set in Kansas, the town of Brightburn is changed by Brandon’s awakening to his powers which leads to some interesting interactions with his family. Dunn) grapples with his new found superpowers and superiority complex. Starting with the plot, the film follows the Breyer family as Brandon Breyer (Jackson A. The film delivers on some satisfying effects but fails to detach itself from common horror tropes. Seeing the trailers and marketing had really risen expectations of a fleshed-out film with enjoyable visuals and a satisfying horror experience. With a small budget of $6 million dollars, “Brightburn” hopes to capture the horror audience in full. This concept is what the film plays with through its seemingly short hour and a half run time. A Superman-type figure turning evil is fascinating and can be made into a great story if given the time and thought to flesh out fully. A spin on the classic saviour from another planet trope is an interesting film idea that “Brightburn” plays with and spins into a dark take on an otherwise happy story. Whatever you use, it should be of appropriate size and escapeproof. Plastic shoeboxes of various sizes, glass aquariums and custom-built wooden habitats all suffice. I have kept them in many types of enclosures over the years. Caging Particularsīrazilian rainbow boas thrive in captivity and make excellent pets as long as their requirements are met. The author’s Brazilian rainbow boa enclosures in this photo each measure 36 inches long by 24 inches wide by 21 inches tall. Once such an area is found, they patiently wait for their next meal. Rather than actively hunting down their prey, they probably seek out high-rodent-traffic areas. Once they have found a suitable location, they assume a sit-and-wait position with their heads extended from their shelters. They may be found searching for a drink or for a new daytime hiding spot. They don’t possess any pattern on their ventral surface because it is never exposed and therefore doesn’t need to blend in.īrazilian rainbow boas are nocturnal, and they often become active an hour or two after sundown. This busy pattern and bold coloration serve to break up the outline of their bodies as they camouflage themselves among debris on the forest floor. These markings contrast their stark-white ventral surfaces, and they are further enhanced by the iridescence radiating from their scales, which reflect hues of blue, green and purple thanks to chemicals called “purines” located in cells of the epidermis. Usually three distinct black stripes run along their heads, and black circles containing yellow to orange to fiery-red crescent-shaped markings run along each side of the animal’s body from head to tail. Their color ranges from orange to deep-red with orange to red saddles running down their backs. They never get so big that one person can’t handle them alone. They are impressive animals but not giant snakes. Large females can grow to 6 to 7 feet and weigh up to 9 pounds. Humidity is fairly constant at 60 to 70 percent.īrazilian rainbows are a popular subspecies because of their outstanding appearance. A steady temperature between 73 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit is expected year round, and annual rainfall varies from 58.5 to 136.5 inches depending on the particular location. Jaws attached by stretchy ligaments allow them to swallow their prey whole, no matter the size, and they can go weeks or months without food after a big meal. Anacondas are nonvenomous constrictors, coiling their muscular bodies around captured prey and squeezing until the animal asphyxiates. They reach their monumental size on a diet of wild pigs, deer, birds, turtles, capybara, caimans, and even jaguars. Their eyes and nasal openings are on top of their heads, allowing them to lay in wait for prey while remaining nearly completely submerged. They are cumbersome on land, but stealthy and sleek in the water. On Land and in WaterĪnacondas live in swamps, marshes, and slow-moving streams, mainly in the tropical rain forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins. Other anaconda species, all from South America and all smaller than the green anaconda, are the yellow, dark-spotted, and Bolivian varieties. Females are significantly larger than males. Kaspersky Safe Kids undercuts both of those services considerably it only charges $14.99 per year and supports an unlimited number of child devices. Norton Family Premier is cheaper ($49.99 per year) than Qustodio and does not limit the number of devices you can monitor. The biggest difference is in the pricing. These products have similar features to Qustodio for Families. Qustodio for Schools aims to keep students on track when using school computers, while Qustodio for Business is designed to make sure employees are working, not watching cat videos-or worse. Some advantages these plans offer over the free version are up to 30 days of activity history, application-based time restrictions, and location tracking. Qustodio structures its paid subscription plans around family size, with Small (five devices), Medium (10 devices), and Large (15 devices) options. You also get basic controls like web filtering and time quotas for certain activities. The free version limits monitoring to just a single device and only keeps seven days of activity history. Qustodio for Families is expensive, but it does have a permanently free option. Many do not realize that in Mexico there was a highly refined Aztec literary tradition that predated the Spanish and continued well after the Conquest. Besides, in that massive library of her grandfather’s there was most likely a book or two of poetry written in Nahuatl. Juana learned the Aztec language because it was widely used around her and depending on the viceroy in charge at any given time, Nahuatl was an official language of New Spain, alongside Spanish. As stated earlier, the Ramírez and Asbaje families were pure Spanish. Modern-day authors who want to classify Juana as “oppressed” or “marginalized” claim that she learned Nahuatl to get a better understanding of her indigenous roots. Within a year, likely with some help of native speakers in her life, Juana mastered this indigenous language and would later even write poetry in it. In her grandfather’s vast book collection Juana discovered a work on the grammar of Nahuatl, the native language of the Aztecs. The budding poet wrote her first poem by the age of 8. By the age of three Juana could read Latin and by five she was able to understand the various ledgers and accounts connected with the finances of the hacienda. Her yearning for knowledge led her to follow her older sister to school to eavesdrop on lessons. Yelapa: arriving and walking along the beach (Cabo Corrientes, Mexico)Īs a young girl Juana spent a great deal of time in her grandfather’s very extensive library. As Juana’s father was from Spain and her mother was Spanish born in the New World, Juana was considered criolla in the social hierarchy of colonial Mexico. Juana never knew her father, a Spanish military captain from the Basque region named Pedro Manuel de Asbaje. Juana’s mother, Isabel, managed the hacienda at Panoayán. Young Juana’s maternal grandfather, the Andalusia-born Pedro Ramírez de Santillana owned two profitable haciendas. Although somewhat scandalous for 17 th Century New Spain, Juana’s mother made do as she was from a family of modest means. Juana’s mother, Isabel Ramírez de Santillana, never married and had five other children from two different men. Juana Inés de Asbaje Ramírez de Santillana was born in colonial Mexico a full century after the Aztec Conquest. One of the giants of Spanish literature of her time, and read from Spain to India to the Philippines, many people do not know much about this woman other than wondering casually who is behind the face on the Mexican 200-peso note. While lost to history for the better part of two hundred years, it was only in the 20 th century that scholars and biographers began examining the life and times of this fascinating historical figure. The person who would later become one of the most renown and controversial women in colonial Mexico was born on Novemin this sunny place between Cuernavaca and Puebla in central New Spain. So wrote the nun, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz about her humble birth, in the small town of San Miguel Nepantla, in the fertile foothills of the Mexican volcano Popocatépetl. |
